Korean/Applied Linguistics TS Assistant Professor
Position Summary
We are seeking to hire a Korea Foundation assistant professor with a specialization in Korean language studies and applied linguistics in the Department of Linguistics, Languages, and Cultures. A successful candidate will teach three courses on Korean language or culture and one course for the Applied Linguistics program, funded in part by the Korea Foundation. Employment begins on August 16, 2026, and the candidate must have a Ph.D. in hand by that date.
The candidate shall (i) focus on Korean Language Studies as the primary subject of research and education; (ii) focus on the Korean language in more than fifty percent (50%) of their research; (iii) be proficient in the Korean language, and (iv) publish the findings of such research in the English language, and possibly in the Korean language.
The faculty member will teach three Korean language or culture classes each academic year and one undergraduate or graduate course in the Applied Linguistics Program. We expect that the faculty member will assume a leadership role in curriculum development and assist in promoting and building the new Korean major at Michigan State University.

Required Degree
Doctorate -applied linguistics, linguistics, Korean language studies, or a related area
Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in applied linguistics, linguistics, Korean language studies, or a related area
Two years of Korean language teaching experience
The ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in applied linguistics
Strong research potential in the area of applied linguistics with relevance to Korean language studies
Excellent written and oral communication skills in Korean and English.
Leadership potential in program coordination, program and learner evaluation/assessment, and articulated-curriculum development
Desired Qualifications
More than two years of Korean language teaching experience at the university level
Published research in the area of applied linguistics with relevance to Korean language studies
Specialization in one or more of the follow areas: GenAI in language teaching and materials design, corpus linguistics, assessment and program evaluation, teacher education, research methods, second language acquisition of heritage language learners, multilingualism, sociolinguistics
Experience in program coordination, curriculum development, and student placement into summer internships, externships, or post-graduation employment
Ability to teach an undergraduate general education course in Korean performance and visual culture (e.g., K-pop, Korean cinema, Korean dramas)
